Hand Luggage Rules 2026: The Ultimate Guide for Your Flight

The hand luggage rules 2026 have evolved in many ways – and knowing them saves time, money and nerves. Whether you’re departing from Frankfurt, Munich or Berlin: with the right knowledge, you’ll pack smart and get through security with ease. In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know for your next flight.

Why the hand luggage rules 2026 are so important

The days of just throwing anything into a suitcase are over. Airlines are checking more and more closely at the gate, and anyone who doesn’t know the hand luggage rules 2026 risks hefty additional charges. This can get expensive, especially with budget airlines like Ryanair or Wizz Air. Yet it’s not complicated at all if you keep the key points in mind.

The most important dimensions and weights

Most airlines allow one piece of hand luggage with the dimensions 55 x 40 x 20 cm. That’s roughly equivalent to a classic cabin trolley. With some carriers like Lufthansa or Eurowings, you may also bring a small bag (e.g. handbag or laptop backpack). The weight is usually between 7 and 8 kg – with Ryanair it’s 10 kg if you’ve booked Priority Boarding. EasyJet allows 15 kg, but only with booked extras.

Be sure to pay attention to your airline’s exact regulations, as there is no uniform rule. An oversized trolley is often strictly rejected at the gate. A trick: measure your hand luggage with a tape measure before your trip and weigh it on a kitchen scale. That way you’re on the safe side.

Liquids in hand luggage: What is allowed in 2026?

The 100 ml rule for liquids still applies, but with exceptions: at some airports like Frankfurt or Munich, modern CT scanners are in use that allow liquids up to 2 liters. But be careful: this only applies if your departure airport uses this technology and you’re flying directly. On connecting flights, the rule may apply again.

All containers must be in a transparent, resealable bag (1 liter capacity). Medications and baby food are exempt, but often require a medical certificate.

Clothing and shoes: Pack smart

It’s best to wear heavy clothing like jackets or shoes directly to save weight. Another tip: roll your clothes instead of folding them – that saves space and prevents wrinkles. For a weekend trip, 3 t-shirts, 1 pair of pants, 1 sweater and underwear are often enough.

What is not allowed in hand luggage?

Sharp objects, weapons, explosive substances and certain chemicals are prohibited. Power banks may also only be transported in hand luggage, not in checked baggage. Pay attention to the watt-hour rating: up to 100 Wh is usually allowed; beyond that, you need airline approval.

Tips for stress-free packing

• Use packing cubes to make optimal use of space.
• Wear your heaviest items when boarding.
• Always put important documents and valuables in your hand luggage.
• Check your airline’s hand luggage rules on their website in advance.
