The best time to visit Vienna depends on what you’re looking for: mulled wine at the Christmas market, grilling in the Augarten, lush green hills in the Vienna Woods or baroque facades in mild spring light. Vienna works all year round – but every season tastes different. Anyone checking our cheap flights from Germany is anyway only a few hours from the Danube.
Vienna in spring: The green concert and indulgence season
From March the city thaws out: The Naschmarkt fills up again with stalls, day-trippers head to the Danube Island, and the first flowers bloom in the Burggarten. Late April to June is probably the most pleasant time for city breaks to Vienna: temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees, long evenings in cafés and outdoor seating in the restaurant garden.
If you love music, you should plan for late May and June – during the Vienna Festival programme (the Festwochen have taken place in early summer for decades), concerts and theatre fill the city. Kahlenberg and the vineyards at Nußdorf also offer themselves for hikes before it gets really hot.
Summer in Vienna: Hot, lively, full of music
July and August are the hottest months, often above 30 degrees. That’s when it’s nicest to go out early: in the morning to Schönbrunn Zoo, at midday to the cool MuseumsQuartier, in the evening to swim at Cobenzl or to the Danube with the famous Danube Canal beer. In summer, the Film Festival takes place on Rathausplatz, with open-air cinema and food stalls right in front of the City Hall.
August is holiday time – many local shops close, but the major sights are well visited. If you want to see Belvedere Palace or St. Stephen’s Cathedral without a queue, plan for the early morning. You should definitely check for air conditioning at hotels in summer.
Autumn: Perhaps the best time to visit Vienna
September and October are the golden season for city breaks to Vienna. Temperatures become milder, the coffee houses fill up, and the Vienna Woods glows in red and gold. Autumn is also wine festival time: In Grinzing, Nussdorf and Stammersdorf the young wine is served, at Heurigen with cold cuts and brass music.
In October Vienna also fills up for Vienna Design Week, and the Naschmarkt is full of pumpkin and chestnuts. If you prefer it quieter, come between September and early November – before the Christmas hustle and after the summer heat.
Winter: Advent, balls and the scent of mulled wine
From late November the Viennese Advent begins: The Christmas market in front of the City Hall, the Christmas market on Spittelberg and the market at Karlsplatz are among the most beautiful. Punch is served in the typical cups, and the smell of gingerbread is in the air. December is cold (often around freezing), but romantic – especially in the alleys of the Inner City.
January is ball season: The Viennese balls, above all the Vienna Opera Ball, shape the winter. Afterwards it gets quieter – good months for affordable city breaks to Vienna with fewer crowds. With snow, Schönbrunn and the Hofburg are especially photogenic.
When is it cheapest?
High season in Vienna is May to October as well as the Advent period in December. If you want to save on prices, book January to March (except ball weekends) or the first half of November. Accommodation and flights are then usually cheaper, and the queues at the sights shorter.
For getting there: Vienna is reachable from many German cities in under two hours by plane. Our city breaks are especially worthwhile in spring and autumn. And if you have more time, you can combine Vienna with a short trip to Bratislava or Budapest with the current flight deals.
