Alicante is more than just an airport on the Costa Blanca. The city offers a picturesque old town with the Barrio de Santa Cruz, narrow alleys and colorful flower boxes. High above the city sits the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, a fortress from the 9th century, from which you have a breathtaking view over the bay.

For food, you absolutely must try the local specialty Arroz a banda – a spicy rice with fish, served in many restaurants on the Explanada de España. The tapas bars in the El Barrio district are also worth a visit. And if you like swimming: Playa del Postiguet is right by the city and is often still pleasant in November.

Best travel time & practical tips

In November and December, Alicante has mild temperatures: during the day mostly between 17 and 20 degrees, cooler at night. Rain is possible, but it usually stays dry. The water temperature is around 17 degrees – still suitable for swimming for the hardy.

From the airport, you can get to the city with the bus C6 for about €4 or by taxi for about €20. Once there, the tram and the bus are worth using to explore the coast. A walk along the Explanada de España with its wave-shaped mosaics is free and a highlight.

Money-saving tips: Use the lunch menus (Menú del día) in local restaurants – often from €10. Many museums are free on Sundays. And the beaches outside the city, such as San Juan, are cheap to reach by bus.
