February is an underrated choice for a city trip to Athens. Daytime temperatures are usually around 15 degrees, dropping to around 8 degrees at night – rain is to be expected, but in return the sights are much quieter than in summer. Pack a light jacket and an umbrella and you’ll be well prepared.

Getting around on site is easiest by metro and tram; you buy tickets from the machines. Many routes in the city centre you’ll cover on foot anyway. Real money-saving tips: many museums offer reduced or free admission on certain days – check the official websites in advance. Lunch at the tavernas in Psirri and Monastiraki is usually cheaper than in the evening, and a combined ticket for several ancient sites can be worth it if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing.
